When a skin wound or injury happens to someone with diabetes, it is common for the wound not to heal. This is due to impaired blood circulation and a decrease in immune system healing at the wound site. These issues happen in diabetic individuals because of elevated blood sugar levels. Diabetic ulcers most often occur on the feet and legs.
Having a diabetic ulcer is oftentimes fatal and presents a major medical burden for two reasons: Firstly, diabetic ulcers frequently become colonized with bacteria and chronically infected. Infected diabetic ulcers often involve bacterial biofilms – which are notoriously resistant to antibiotic treatment. Secondly, diabetic ulcers often lead to gangrene (death of the foot or limb) which requires limb amputation. Studies show that roughly one third of diabetic ulcer patients die within 5 years, which is the same mortality rate as cancer.[3]
Treatment options are limited to antibiotics. However, treating the infection alone is often not sufficient to promote resolution and closure of diabetic ulcers. Currently, there are no approved treatment options for diabetic ulcers that have dual anti-infective + wound healing action.
